Glen Iris Project Team Community Update

The koi fish from the irrigation lakes at the Glen Iris Estate project site are headed for new homes, thanks to the Koi Society of WA.

Forty-five koi were carefully captured by our licensed fauna relocator and transported in approved poly bags to the Woodvale Fish and Lily Farm, one of the Society’s nominated partners.

They were released into the water garden nursery’s specialist koi ponds and will now be rehomed with ornamental fish keepers and keen koi hobbyists.

The Koi Society of WA is dedicated to providing leadership and greater knowledge to members and the public across all aspects of koi keeping.

You can find out more about their activities and the koi rehoming service at www.koiclubwa.com

Glen Iris Project Team Community Update

We are continuing our work on the management of the lakes at Glen Iris this week, with our environmental consultants and contractors continuing the work on the gradual draining of the lakes across the property.

As we have previously advised, we are undertaking this work to ensure these unfenced water bodies do not pose a community drowning risk and do not become mosquito breeding grounds in warmer months. They are being drained under the guidance of our environmental consultants and it will result in a gradual lowering of the water levels. Our consultant and licenced relocation contractor will regularly visit and check for aquatic fauna in the lakes and safely re-home them to approved habitat locations as required.

Acumen Development Solutions have provided regular updates to City of Cockburn on these activities.

Glen Iris Project Team Community Update

Following the closure of the golf course, the reticulation system at the project site has been turned off.

This means the irrigation lakes are no longer necessary.

To ensure these unfenced water bodies do not pose a community drowning risk and do not become mosquito breeding grounds, they are being drained with approval from the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions (DBCA).

One of the lakes was home to some Koi Fish and turtles.

Safely capturing these animals and relocating them to an approved habitat was our priority.

We hired a fauna relocation specialist approved by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions who has been to site this week.

Two Southwest Snake-necked Turtles along with a number of Koi Fish have been carefully captured and relocated to a private dam approved by DBCA.

Our environmental consultant has been overseeing the aquatic fauna relocation program and will continue to inspect all the lakes within our project site over the coming months.

Acumen Development Solutions, which leads the Glen Iris Project Team, updated the City of Cockburn and representatives of the Jandakot Residents and Ratepayers Association on the draining of the lakes and the fauna relocation plans earlier this week.

Glen Iris Project Team Community Update

Forrestfield’s Hartfield Golf Club will be greener than ever thanks to a donation of the rare putting grass that covers the course from our project site.

Originally imported from America in the early 2000s the Bentgrass ‘Putter’ variety is no longer available in Australia but is still commonly used on golf courses throughout the US.

Hartfield’s Golf Course Superintendent, Nick Kinley, was delighted with the opportunity to harvest the Glen Iris turf.

“I have been at Hartfield for seven years and have been chasing it for most of that time – even looking for it while attending a golf industry show in America,” he said.

“To me, this variety of Bentgrass is tried and true, planted at Hartfield over twenty years ago and still withstanding the hot dry Western Australian climate.”

“We are doing remedial work on a number of greens collars, and the rest will be grown in our turf nursery where in due time it will be used for more course improvements including redoing our chipping green,” he said.

With Hartfield being impacted by COVID-19 restrictions we were happy to not only provide the turf at no cost but assist with its transfer to Forrestfield.
